tomato… dye!

Ah, not the tomato itself (wouldn’t that be wonderful!) but madder root, heated slowly to reveal a rich warm red that made tomato-colored playsilks.

On the cotton (presoaked in alum mordant) it made a reddish pink, a sweet color that will add richness to our quilted pillow shams.

Madder is funny that way, it can reveal different colors depending on how it is soaked, and/or heated. Such a range of beautiful rose reds and tomatoes.

Speaking of tomatoes, it’s going to be canning time soon around here. In the meantime, aren’t cherry tomatoes the best when popped directly in the mouth? No additives, mordants or other directions required. Ahhhhh. Have a wonderful weekend!
