Brooch Swap!

Monday, September 24, 2012 – Filed under: Uncategorized ::

Margaret of We Bloom Here and I have been talking about doing a swap together for a long time, and we’ve finally put one together to mark the start of autumn (or spring, depending on where you are). Something for us, to spruce up our outfits and share a little piece of wearable art.  A wonderful share / lend with older children (I know mine will be asking… well… she already has :) but something mostly for Mamas.

So here we are!  A brooch swap. One to make and send to someone who will craft one for you. To add a little sparkle, a little color, a little something extra special. I embroidered the one at the top on wool felt with a series of french knots and stitches. The beautiful raccoon pin, above, was handmade by murmurfremo in paper clay and she even has wire-rimmed glasses!

There’s something so very wonderful about brooches. How they can be worn on clothes and in settings when chains or necklaces just wouldn’t work as well. And there’s something so textural and colorful and 3D about them. (Above, one of my favorites, a brooch I saw back in 2010 and posted about in this space, by FlowersbyIrene).

Here are some of my other favorites, done in all sorts of materials and fibres. You can also head over to We Bloom Here where Margaret has beautiful photos of brooches she & others have made.

Brooches above are (L to R, Top Row): feathered brooch by Cat Rabbit ; pink cloud brooch with a silver lining by AnAstridEndeavor ; and  a lovely peach felt brooch whose source I can no longer find but I’m looking…

(2nd Row): set of 3 heart brooches by TheFrenchKnots ; heart brooches by Katie Canavan ; yellow felt flower brooch by clootielugs

(3rd Row): felt sea brooch by neekienoo ; fabric moth brooch by BlueTerracotta ; shiny sardine brooches by Claire Payne

(4th Row): house brooch by designedbyjane ; green mountain brooch ;  eco owl brooch by materialised

(Bottom Row):  Melissa of tiny happy’s embroidered brooches on vintage linen; textile fiber brooch by Birribe ; another heart brooch via Pinterest

And one more! A gorgeous fox brooch I saw on Pinterest.
