To Sing
We did it. We started a choir, a choir for homeschoolers. Nearly 30 of them, in two different groups. During the day. The morning, actually. With a fantastically talented musician, songwriter, chorister and choir director. Who is helping draw out the song in each one of these children. Who helps to harness their energy and guide it into amazing melodies.
It all started back in the summer when my 5 year old asked me, softly and firmly, whether we could start a choir.
Oh my.
I’d sung in the Montreal Childrens’ Choir for years. But this was altogether different.
But it happened.
And it’s a wonderful, affirming testament to the power of community, listening to childrens’ amazingly wonderful ideas, asking around until you find the right person (he or she is out there), and being brave enough to take a risk.
So if you’ve been thinking about organizing something, getting some folks together for something, providing an avenue for kids to have communal musical experiences together… well… just do it. I’m reminded of that fantastic 1980s Costner baseball movie. The people – they wil come.
