sideswept braids + eco chic

Monday, March 28, 2011 – Filed under: beklina,eco friendly,handmade,organic,shopping ::

Just love browsing the beautiful organic + eco friendly pieces over at Beklina… like this Lina Rennell sweatshirt, available in black (soft airy merino organic wool crepe), or blue & grey Dots print (100% organic cotton French Terry). On sale to boot.

And the side braid is so pretty.

This dress also caught my eye (perhaps the flattering shape appeals to this 3rd trimester mama)… the Julie Park organic cotton dress. Also on sale.

Flattery is all right so long as you don’t inhale

One of my favorite quotes – by Adlai Stevenson.

Earlier this week we were humbled and delighted to be included a little list here, and particularly thrilled to see our baby bedding highlighted here. Thank you, Babble.com!

And then we saw our organic flannel + chalkboard cotton bibs in Cool Mom Picks‘ Ultimate Baby Shower Gift Guide here (now we really wish we had more of that fabric stored away…)

That’s the funny thing about having an online shop – missing that interface with real people and real smiles and real handshakes. We’re very thankful for being noticed, and also for the wonderful compliments that come from people who have honored us by choosing pieces from our shop, like the customer who just yesterday told us about how delighted she was with her organic stuffed jointed bunny dolls order.

It reminds us that even thought it’s virtual, it is still very real. It reminds us that we must continually strive to improve in our design, our craft, and the gentle ways we treat the earth (sourcing even more organic supplies, as locally as possible, daring to be different and being as original as possible).

a thing for vintage gingham

We have a thing for it over at our shop. We snap up pieces of colorful, vintage seersucker gingham like nobody’s business.

I love the feel of it, the gradient colors, the texture… the lightness… and rescuing pieces of old fabric that are still beautiful and shouldn’t be stored for another few decades.

Recently we made up some spring and summer dresses with some little pieces we found. A blue and brown gingham seersucker one…

… and a hot pink raspberry and golden yellow one

Recently, a client paired a piece we had leftover from another dress with Oeko-Tex certified pink cotton to make a one of a kind quilt and pillow sham for her soon-to-be-born baby’s nursery.  A little retro, not overly feminine, graphic but timeless.
We also have a picnic blanket listed, made with vintage gingham in sorbet colors.
Now if only we could find more delicious pieces of seersucker gingham. Off to search. I’m going to try to save some to do some late summer pants (love Anna Maria Horner’s pattern) up for the baby boy.

map love

Geography is a hot topic around here.

Studying maps and learning about how children live in other countries… festivals… food…. celebrations… fascinating. Especially for one particularly precocious 4 year old I know.

This giant (organic!) map pillow cushion cover by mybeardedpigeon would be perfect for cuddling up for a little atlas reading, don’t you think?

Here are some of my other favorite geographical favorites right now:

handmade (super cute) greeting cards from redstarINK

handmade paperweight by tannerglass (such a fabulous artisan shop – read her story of inspiration on Murano, near Venice, searching out a world famous blown glass tool)

maps as art – fine art – a handmade London mapcut by studiokmo (to help me reminisce about that fabulous year I spent in grad school in the middle of London…

LB Dress part II

Monday, January 31, 2011 – Filed under: clothing,fashion,handmade,women ::

Ever since I posted about the Uniform Project’s fabulous little black suit… I’ve been having little black dresses on the brain. There’s a lovely high necked 50′s style crepe one from the great Ottawa second hand store around the corner in my closet waiting for the first after-baby dinner (maybe lunch?) date… oh, I’m not sure how that will ever happen. But when it does, my dress is ready.

I’ve always been a little black dress fan, and have picked out a few of my very favorites. Handmade, of course.

the amazing black dress (with pockets!!) from American finchdesignsf

the piano dress by Japanese designer tidabeads

black high neck dress with constellation design by Italian designer nivule

the Suzi dress (it comes in black & is so pregnant and new mama-friendly!) by New Zealand’s CastCouture

it’s what’s inside that counts

Finally, after a year or so of these dolls falling off my to-do list (I’m sure you know just the feeling)… I made two new sets.

Here is the first, carefully sewn with vintage upcycled cotton, scraps of Liberty of London cotton, leftover pieces of vanilla ice cream organic cotton from our quilts and organic cotton flannel faces.  Embroidered features, wool felt hair, and wool stuffing. I make them “footed” so to speak, so they can stand up, with little felt bottoms. Available in our shop now, with another set coming this week.

After a quick weekend to rejuvenate and change up the pace in Montreal, I’m so excited about everyone who has signed up for the seasonal swap – still time to sign up this week! It’s going to be wonderful!!

It turns out that the fabulous folks at Romantic Homes Magazine included one of our handmade Marimekko picnic blankets in their October issue. What a thrill!

Thank you, Romantic Homes!

p.s. and if you are celebrating, have a fabulous Halloween.
